Message from the Chair

Poet W.B. Yeats once wrote, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” I would like to commend our Northeast State Foundation for lighting fires within our students. From serving as Tennessee Promise mentors to volunteering for our annual Because of You Campaign, our Foundation board steps up to the plate.

Northeast State Foundation ChairThis annual report provides an overview of college and foundation efforts in Academic Year 2016-17, as well as goals for the currently Academic Year 2017-18.

I had the privilege of becoming chair of the Northeast State Foundation on July 1, 2017. Prior to that, my friend Lee Shillito donated four years of service as chair of the foundation. Under his leadership, our endowment continued to grow to the second
largest amount community colleges in Tennessee. In addition, we established an initiative to increase grants and funding for our college’s programs, clubs and scholarships through a U.S. Department of Education Title III project, which originated 20 years
earlier.

I am excited about the possibilities that await our students in the current academic year and the years to come. With Tennessee Promise, a state program that provides tuition for our students who immediately graduate from high school, and with upcoming
programs such as Tennessee Reconnect, which will provide tuition assistance for certain nontraditional students beginning in fall 2018, we have great avenues for financial assistance in our state. But there continues to be unmet tuition needs for many of our
students, including, but not limited to, books, electronic equipment, and more. The Foundation will continue to serve as a mechanism to help fill in the education funding gaps for those students, as well as students who may not qualify for either program.

Education in Tennessee is looking bright, and our Foundation is proud to be part of the progress.

Sincerely,

Peter Raber,
Northeast State Foundation Chair, 2018
