All prospective students must submit a Northeast State Application for Admission before scheduling any assessment and placement tests.

Degree-seeking students applying for admission to Northeast State undergo assessment testing in English, Reading, and Algebra to ensure that each student is academically prepared to enter his or her chosen field of study. Students are assessed by either the ACT® or SAT® test or by the ACCUPLACER® test. ACT and SAT scores must be within five years of the first day of class in order to be valid. Students who did not take the ACT or SAT or whose scores are invalid or do not have college transfer credit in English, Reading, and/or Math from a regionally accredited college or university will take the ACCUPLACER test.

ACT test scores in English, Reading, and Math are used to determine if students are college ready or if further assessment is needed.

  • Students with an ACT English score of 17 or less are required to take the ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills test.
  • Students with an ACT Reading score of 18 or less are required to take the ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension test.
  • Students with an ACT Math score of 18 or less will take the ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra test.

ACCUPLACER is a computerized test and provides assessment in three areas: Sentence Skills, Reading Comprehension, and Algebra. It is user-friendly, and computer skills are not required to take the test. A test administrator is always available to assist students with accessing the test. Score results are printed after testing is completed.

ACCUPLACER is available on the Blountville, Bristol, Elizabethton, Johnson City, and Kingsport campuses. Testing in Blountville is available several days each week. Testing is available in Johnson City and Kingsport twice a month, but is limited in Bristol and Elizabethton to once a month during peak months. There is a $5 testing fee for first-time test takers. All test scheduling is completed online. A reminder of your scheduled test date will be sent to your email account. Northeast State also proctors ACCUPLACER for non-Northeast State students who will attend other colleges. The testing fee is $25 for non-Northeast State students.
