High School Equivalency Tests
Northeast State is an approved Testing Center for High School Equivalency Testing. Tennessee now accepts two tests: the GED® and the HiSET®. The HiSET is the high school equivalency test for the Tennessee High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma.
The GED paper-based test was discontinued at Northeast State in December 2013. Walters State Community College's Testing Center in Morristown offers the new GED computer-based test. Information about the new GED is available from the
GED Testing Service
The Tennessee Alternative Diploma Act became effective January 1, 2014, and created the Tennessee High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma for state residents. Northeast State administers the HiSET examination, both paper- and computer-based versions.
Preparing for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET): The first step toward pursuing a Tennessee High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma is to contact an Adult Education Center for information about free preparation classes. Qualified instructors will assist applicants in preparing for the test. An Adult Education Center is located in every county. Northeast State does not offer the prep classes. Applicants must take the Official Practice Test, then the next step is to schedule their HSE test dates at Northeast State by calling 423.354.2587 or emailing
