How to Apply for Aid?

Completed applications received by March 1st will receive priority consideration for most financial aid funds. A new application for financial aid must be filed for each academic year. State funds are available only to students who are Tennessee residents and whose financial aid application was received and processed by the state of Tennessee's deadline.

  • State and federally funded aid program requirements are:
    • U.S. citizen; U.S. national; U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551C or refugee. If you are not in one of these categories, click here to view more guidelines posted in the Student Guide for Financial Aid students .
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Social Security number (Be sure that the name matches the name on the Social Security card).
    • No convictions for possession/sale of illegal drugs while receiving federal aid.
    • Selective Service registration for males 18 to 25 years of age.

  • The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be submitted for each academic year to apply for Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Work-Study (FWS), Tennessee Student Assistance Award (TSAA), Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (TELS), TN Promise, and some institutional and local scholarships. Keep in mind some of these funds are limited and students who apply by February 15th have a better chance of receiving an award.

    1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submitted to the federal processor. Include Northeast State's Federal School Code Number 005378.

    2. Complete and submit your FAFSA information at Continuing students may complete a renewal FAFSA online. All students must have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to electronically "sign" a submitted FAFSA; a parent will also need to obtain a PIN number to sign a dependent student's application.
    3. For assistance in completing the FAFSA application, contact the Financial Aid Help Center.  The Financial Aid Help Center is located in Room C2402 of the General Studies Building on Northeast State's main campus in Blountville. To schedule an appointment with the Financial Aid Help Center you may visit or contact the Center by email at For a list of items needed at time of appointment click here.

    4. Student Aid Report (SAR) . The SAR is the notice of eligibility from the federal government for the Federal Pell Grant and the basis for eligibility for other need-based student aid programs. This data is sent electronically to all colleges listed on the FAFSA. If Northeast State was not listed, you will need to visit and click on "Add a school" underneath Returning User.  Once you have logged into your existing FAFSA, you can add the Northeast State school code (005378).

Financial aid does not automatically transfer from one school to another. To ensure that financial aid is in order, contact both current and new institutions.  If an educational loan has been obtained/requested, you may also need to contact your lender.

    5. Federal Work-Study Program. Students must complete a Federal Work-Study Application and submit it to the Financial Aid Office to be considered for the program.

    6. If an application is selected for verification, then you will be required to submit specific verification items.  The forms needed vary on an individual student basis.  You can check your MyNortheast account to see what documents need to be submitted.
