The purpose of the Northeast State Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to eligible Tennessee residents who express a desire to continue their education and show potential for graduation from Northeast State Community College with certificates and/or associate degrees. Northeast State's commitment to equity and success for a diverse student body enhances the quality of life in the Northeast Tennessee region. Diversity is one of the College's six guiding beliefs: "Diversity - creativity and achievement are fostered through respect for all individuals and their ideas."
General Scholarship Provisions
The Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship Program may assist Tennessee residents with maintenance fees/tuition, required books, and/or supplies.
A limited number of scholarships based on the cost of 12 hours of enrollment will be awarded for an academic year. The scholarships will be designated for qualified first-time freshman and returning college students.
Awards are not guaranteed from one academic year to the next. Students must reapply for consideration each academic year of award and are limited to a maximum of four semesters of Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship funding. Previous semesters of Educational Access and Diversity funding prior to the Fall 2013 Semester count towards the four semester maximum.
Awards are competitive. Students meeting criteria will be evaluated based upon academic performance, enrollment status, and unmet need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Students must be enrolled in a certificate or associate degree program.
Students must meet one of the following criteria for underrepresented populations to qualify for Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship consideration:
Classified as a United States Military Veteran. Proof of veteran status must be submitted to the Office of Scholarship Programs in order to qualify under military veteran criterion.
Hispanic/Latino/Spanish origin, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander origin as documented by the Northeast State Office of Admissions and Records.
Registered with the Center for Students with Disabilities at Northeast State.
The Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship Program is funded annually and awards are renewed on a semester-by-semester basis pending Financial Aid approval. Limited funding is available. No awards are guaranteed.
Fall and spring enrollments must be complete by the last day to add a class for the full fall and/or spring term.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship Program, individuals must:
Be eligible to apply for Federal Student Aid and must complete the 2013-2014 FAFSA.
Enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester.
Applicants with earned college credit must have a minimum overall combined 2.75 GPA inclusive of Learning Support coursework.
Eligible applicants must not have earned associate degrees or higher by the beginning of the 2013 Fall Semester.
Graduation from Northeast State terminates scholarship eligibility.
Performance/Accountability Criteria
Students must successfully complete at least 12 credit hours each semester with passing grades to remain eligible for award renewal.
Students must maintain a minimum overall combined 2.75 GPA inclusive of Learning Support coursework to remain eligible for program assistance. Recipients will be evaluated at the end of each semester.
Students who do not maintain criteria and lose awards due to extenuating circumstances may appeal in writing to the Office of Scholarship Programs. Supporting documentation must accompany the appeal. The scholarship subcommittee from the Committee for Recruitment, Enrollment, and Retention of Underrepresented Populations will review all appeals and determine scholarship status.

The 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed and processed before Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship assistance can be awarded. To be eligible for the 2013-2014 Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship Program, the applicant's Financial Aid file must be complete by July 1, 2013. This includes any additional documentation required to complete the Financial Aid verification process. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at 423.323.0252 if you have questions about completing the Financial Aid process. Northeast State Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship Application. Applications must be submitted online on or before July 1, 2013. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline. In the case of multiple online submissions from the same applicant, only the last Northeast State Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship Application submitted will be considered.
Proof of United States Military Veteran status. Individuals applying for the Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship under the military veteran criterion who are not receiving Veterans Education Benefits and are not registered with the Office of Veterans Affairs must submit documentation proving veteran status. Please submit a copy of your government issued military I.D. card or DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) to the Office of Scholarship Programs (Room F100 of the Faculty Office Building) on or before the July 1, 2013 deadline. If proof of veteran status is not received by the July 1st deadline, your application will not be considered under the military veteran criterion.
