- In May of 2008, the Walters Family Annual Scholarship was established at Northeast State to help future Student Ambassadors. The first recipient of the scholarship was Jeremy Williams, a member of 2007-08 Team Horizon who served as the first president of the Student Navigators, the organization that succeeded the Ambassadors. Jeremy did an outstanding job transitioning the team of remaining Ambassadors into the structure of the new program. With his graduation and the graduation of the remaining Ambassadors from Northeast State in May, the Walters Family Annual Scholarship has been revised to recognize the legacy of the Northeast State Student Ambassadors by honoring your family legacies. Priority selection for the Walters Family Annual Scholarship will be given to descendants of Northeast State Community College alumni who served as members of the Northeast State Student Ambassadors from 1991 to 2008. This means that your children, grandchildren--even great grandchildren--can apply for the scholarship. Applicants must meet the March 1 scholarship deadline each year to be considered and must indicate their relationship to a Student Ambassador in the cover letter which should accompany the scholarship application. The 2009-10 recipient is Courtney Jo Kendrick, daughter of Lisa Ferguson ’97 who was a member of 1996-97 Team Loyalty. Courtney is a 2009 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and a Business Management Technology major at Northeast State. For more information on donating to any of the scholarship funds at Northeast State, contact Megan Horn ’03 who was a member of 2001-02 Team Achievement at 423.279.7637. Megan is coordinator of financial affairs for the Northeast State Foundation and oversees the donations to the various scholarship funds.

May 2008
- A personal message from Greg Walters...
Dear Ambassadors:
Well, this is it. There’s no easy way to share this news, so I will be direct. This week marks the end to my tenure as advisor to the Northeast State Student Ambassadors. After Team Horizon’s last point event on the 22nd, I will officially hand over the reins to Keith Glover, coordinator of student development and activities. This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but I am determined to go out with grace and—thanks to 17 outstanding teams of Ambassadors—while the organization is at the height of its tradition of excellence.
As you know, this past year has been one of great change for me professionally. The growth of the Northeast State scholarship programs has forced my attention and time away from Alumni Affairs and Student Advancement to almost solely concentrating on managing the scholarship programs and scholarship recipients. Dr. Locke has asked me to devote my time and talents to the Scholarship Office as I did to the Student Ambassadors. And, while I know that change is good and that new challenges allow me to grow personally, I am terribly sad to be saying farewell to a program that increased my family every year for 17 years.
I do think of each of you as a member of my family. Every year at orientation, I told each team that they had just joined a new family, and I meant that. I hope that I have proven that to each of you over the years. At times, you have been my children, my brothers, my sisters, my mother, my father, even some annoying cousins, but I have loved every moment with you. I have shared and been allowed to share in so many wondrous events in your lives that I can never repay your kindness. I hope that I taught you some useful knowledge or skill and that you have looked back at your experience as a Student Ambassador and had a light bulb turn on or been Whacked! as I used to relate in EDUC 1015.
Above all, I will remember the laughter and the hugs and the tears that came during the moments of great personal revelation and realization that we all had as Ambassadors. I will remember Angela graduating. I will remember Tracee giggling. I will remember Cindy’s little girls having their picture made with Mommy in her blazer. I will remember Kristi’s giving tree and Thanksgiving food boxes. I will remember a fishing pole from Scott and Alvin. I will remember Famous Amos. I will remember everybody piling on top of Chris during the second Parking Lot Sale. I will remember Monty and Robin’s little boy screaming with delight while being chased by Jerome. I will remember Anna dancing at the Hard Rock Café. I will remember Ginger and her man hunting. I will remember Rachel yelling, “Crap! She ran.” I will remember Jason driving me home while I battled food poisoning. I will remember Tommy and Leslie meeting for the first time. I will remember Amy evolving from student to co-worker to co-advisor to mother of four. I will remember John and Toolman. I will remember Joe’s worm dance and Caleb’s General Fuzz. I will remember Mary Katherine trying calamari for the first time. I will remember Ric and his love for his daughters. I will remember Karen winning Miss Northeast State and David winning our first Outstanding Student Leader award from ASAP. I will remember Donald in Teresa’s dress. I will remember Mandie’s wedding and the time that Stephanie and I beat Jeff playing spades. I will remember Sean’s girl trouble and Robyn finding true love. I will remember Seth bringing his family back to campus to meet me. I will remember Donnie and Judy fighting over used furniture. I will remember Trish, Ted, Beca, and Jon debating absolute zero. I will remember dancing the Super Freak with Bentley and Astrid. I will remember Tiffany speaking up and Jorane finding her voice. I will remember Deb’s laugh. I will remember Caitlin and David calling me Mr. Walters. I will remember Kelley and an outline of a certain dead bear. I will remember Shannon, Rochelle, Steven, Jeremy, Bill, and Armen. In short, I will remember and honor all of you.
As for the Student Ambassadors organization… It is in Keith’s capable hands. Whatever changes occur, remember that it’s the impact you had on each other and on other students as a team that will forever set the standard and keep our tradition of excellence alive. If you have any questions concerning the new membership or the nomination process, please feel free to contact Keith at keglover@NortheastState.edu. I will still be at Northeast State in Room P313 of the Pierce Building, 423.354.5120 or gnwalters@NortheastState.edu. My home number is 423.926.0400 and home e-mail is gregnorm@worldnet.att.net. Please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail if you need anything. Of course, you will still be hearing from me as Alumni, and I am still responsible for Alumni activities at the college. Who knows, I may even start my doctorate!
Thanks to the members of Team Horizon and my co-advisors this year, Megan Horn and Erin Blevins, for making such a wonderful year end on such a high note. My final appearance, so to speak, will be at Team Horizon’s end-of-the-year Family Picnic on Saturday, June 7, at the Boone Dam Pavilion. All Alumni Ambassadors are invited to drop in any time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to share memories and catch up with me. I would love to see all of you! If you would like to participate in the picnic, we ask that you bring a picnic basket with enough food and drinks for your family and a side dish to share with all. Electricity and grills are available if you would like to grill your family’s entrees. Plates, plastic ware, napkins, cups, and charcoal will be provided.
Please R.S.V.P. to Deb Oglesby at ogles2003@comcast.net by June 3rd with the number of guests attending. Boone Dam is located off of Hwy. 75 past the main campus heading towards Gray. Once you enter the park, continue to the top of the hill to the parking area beside the TVA Welcome Center. The shelter is on the right and includes several adjacent picnic tables with individual grills. We are planning to eat at 12:30 p.m. and then present the Top Five in Points and Rochelle Galloway Moore awards at 1:30 p.m.
I have also established the Walters Family Annual Scholarship through the Northeast State Foundation. If you are looking for future tax breaks, consider contributing to this or to any of the Ambassadors’ existing scholarship programs: the R. Wade Powers, Shannon Carter, Steven Compton, Jeremy Hewlett, Bill Bloomer, or Armen Combs scholarship funds. Hopefully, the Walters Family Scholarship will benefit future Ambassadors at the college.
Thanks, again, for making me who I am. Grab your crowns, your crystal balls, your play-doh, your bears, your backpacks, your poems, your prisms, your Rainbow Fishes, your Giving Trees, your happy balls, your SA pins, and your Northeast State degrees. Hold them close and reflect on their meanings. Pass that knowledge along and my job will be done. Remember, if you think you’re a bear… You’re a bear!
With love and thanks, Greg
