Tennessee Board of Regents Community College System

Community College Skills Competitions and Reporting Program

Statement of Purpose:  The purpose of the Community College Skills Competitions and Reporting Program is to recognize students and educational programs for significant achievements in fields of study available at Tennessee’s community colleges and to enhance the overall satisfaction of those students with the Tennessee Board of Regents Community College System and their individual institutions of learning.

Objectives:

  1. Create TBRCCS-Sponsored Skills Competitions (TBR Student Success Goal 1)
  2. Establish Reporting of Non-TBRCCS Competitions (TBR Quality Goal 1)

Strategic Actions:

Create TBRCCS-Sponsored Skills Competitions (TBR Student Success Goal 1)

  • Provide opportunities for students/majors where there are no existing competitions in which community college students can participate
  • Obtain buy-in from each community college President and Academic/Student Affairs Vice President
  • Survey of established inter-collegiate State, Regional, National, and International competitions (academic or student organization related) in which community college students already participate
  • Form oversight committee with contacts from each community college
  • Identify specific programs/majors for competition
  • Develop timeline for state competition (late fall semester or early spring semester)
  • Develop procedures and competition rules for each competition
  • Distribute guidelines for each competition to the community colleges
  • Allow each community college to determine entrants for state competitions
  • Determine budget
  • Determine appropriate recognitions (certificates, medallions, trophies)
  • Host state competitions (Revolving Community College Host)
  • Forward results to appropriate public relations contact for general release
  • Host recognition ceremony at TBR Board Meeting each June or invite selected students to be recognized; provide a final report document to Board members

Establish Reporting of Non-TBRCCS Competitions (TBR Quality Goal 1)

  • Determine existing competitions sponsored by other agencies
  • Obtain buy-in from each community college President and Academic/Student Affairs Vice President
  • Survey of established inter-collegiate State, Regional, National, and International competitions (academic or student organization related) in which community college students already participate
  • Encourage community colleges to participate in established competitions if applicable
  • Identify actual reporting contact at each community college
  • Determine budget
  • Construct reporting mechanism (e-mail, electronic form, secure site)
  • Establish deadline for reporting from each community college (May 1 each year)
  • Limit reports to first- through third-place placements or significant individual recognitions
  • Maintain database of competitions and award winners
  • Forward database to appropriate public relations contact for general release
  • Plan recognition ceremony (Revolving Community College Host)
