Description/Qualifications
A. Definition
Tutors work under
the supervision of the TRiO Student Support Services program director
and program staff. Tutors are responsible for tutoring students,
researching and assisting with implementing ways to improve the
program, and attending tutor meetings, program workshops, seminars
and training sessions. Peer (student) tutors are limited to a total
of 20 hours per week.
B. Supervision
Tutors must follow
oral and written instructions provided by the program director and
staff.
C. Minimum
Acceptable Qualifications
- Completion of
at least one semester of college at Northeast State or other
institution.
- Minimum GPA –
3.0.
- Grade of “A”
or “B” in each course to be tutored.
- Recommendation
from at least two instructors.
- Completion of
initial training sessions (required for certification).
- Effective
verbal and written communication skills.

Advanced Tutor
Job Description/Qualification
A. Definition
Advanced tutors have
earned at least an Associate degree and work under the supervision of
the TRiO Student Support Services program director and program staff.
Tutors are responsible for tutoring students, researching and
assisting with implementing ways to improve the program, and
attending tutor meetings, program workshops, seminars and training
sessions. Advanced tutors will be limited to 20 hours per week total
for all contracts with Northeast State.
B. Typical Duties
and Responsibilities
- Provide
tutorial assistance as assigned.
- Assist
students in the development of study skills necessary for successful
completion of courses.
- Maintain
accurate and current documentation concerning student contact and
progress. Maintain contact with staff and faculty as required.
- Refer
students to TRiO Student Support Services staff for information or
assistance with issues such as academic advisement; juggling family,
work and school; stress and time management; self-esteem and
independence; and study skills, career exploration, and transfer
assistance.
- Maintain a
professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
- Conduct
tutoring sessions in designated areas for scheduled time periods.
- Keep all
information confidential.
- Initiate
contact with appropriate faculty members at least once per semester.
- Attend
monthly tutor training sessions.
- Provide
assistance to staff members to research, implement and maintain the
tutoring component in order to improve the tutoring program.
- Other duties
as assigned.
C. Supervision
- Tutors must
follow oral and written instructions provided by the program
director and staff.
- All contracts
with Northeast State require that advanced tutors are limited to a
total of 20 hours per week.
- Advanced
tutors who teach for Northeast State will not be assigned to tutor
students who are enrolled in their course section.
D. Minimum
Acceptable Qualifications
- Completion of
Associate or Bachelor Degree from an accredited institution with a
final GPA of at least 3.0 and grade of “A” or “B” in
subjects to be tutored if applicable.
- Acceptance as
adjunct faculty at Northeast State or prior tutoring experience for
TRiO Student Support Services with all documentation on file.
- Completion of
initial training sessions (required for certification).
- Effective
verbal and written communication skills.
- Completion of
Beginning Tutor Certification Training during an approved timeline
established by the Tutor Coordinator.
E. Essential
Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to
establish positive working relationships with students and staff.
- Expertise in
areas tutored.
