Peer Tutor and Advanced Tutor Job Descriptions 

Definition

Tutors work under the supervision of the TRiO Student Support Services program director and program staff. Tutors are responsible for tutoring students and for attending tutor meetings, program workshops, seminars and training sessions. Peer tutors are limited to a total of 20 hours per week. Advanced tutors may work up to 27 hours per week dependent upon need for services, and the approval of the program director.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide tutorial assistance as assigned.
  • Assist participants in the development of study skills necessary for successful completion of courses so that students are retained, graduated and/or transferred
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation concerning participant contact and progress.
  • Maintain contact with SSS staff as required.
  • Refer participants to Student Support Services staff for information or assistance with issues such as academic, transfer and career advisement, and problem-solving.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
  • Tutor in designated areas for designated time periods.
  • Keep all information confidential.
  • Initiate contact with appropriate faculty members at least once per semester.
  • Participate in training as required (in the form of sessions, individual study, etc.).

Supervision

Tutors must follow oral and written instructions provided by the program director and staff.

Qualifications for Peer Tutoring Positions

  • Completion of at least one semester of college at Northeast State, dual enrolled at Northeast State, or other institution.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Grade of “A” or “B” in each course to be tutored.
  • Recommendations from at least two instructors.
  • Completion of initial training sessions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Successful Completion of Interview Process

Qualifications for Advanced Tutoring Positions

  • Completion of Associates or Bachelor's Degree at an accredited institution with a final GPA of at least 3.0 and grade of "A" or "B" in subjects to be tutored if applicable. OR
  • Acceptance as adjunct faculty at Northeast State or prior tutoring experience for Student Support Services with all documentation on file
  • Completion of initial training sessions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Successful Completion of Interview Process
  • Pass background check

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Tutors must have good communication skills, the ability to establish positive working relationships with participants, and expertise in areas tutored.

Tutor Pay Rates

  1. Peer tutors and Federal Work Study sponsored tutor pay is $8.00 per hr.
  2. Advanced tutors with no tutoring experience pay is $9.00 per hr.
  3. Advanced tutors with tutoring experience and/or degree above an Associate's Degree pay is $10.00 per hr.
  4. Advanced tutors with 5 or more years of tutoring experience, and Associate's Degree or higher pay is $11.00 per hr.

Mentor Job Descriptions

Definition

Mentors work under the supervision of the TRiO Student Support Services program director and program staff. Mentors should be knowledgeable regarding accessing and utilizing campus resources such as: Degree Works, MyNortheast, and D2L. Additionally, mentors will be trained in assisting students with: how to use a syllabus, time management, balancing life and school, study skills, note taking skills, test taking strategies, test anxiety, and personal/college finances.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

  1. Completion of at least one semester of college at Northeast State or other institution.
  2. Minimum GPA of 2.5
  3. Recommendation from at least two faculty and/or staff members regarding character and dependability.
  4. Completion of initial training sessions.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Ability to establish positive working relationships with students and staff.
  3. Computer/iPad skills and/or office skills.

  • Kingsport campus
  • Elizabethton campus
