Programs FAQs
In support of retention and degree completion, a limited number of Educational Access and Diversity Scholarships will be awarded for the academic year. Recipients must be Tennessee residents and have at least a 2.75 overall combined GPA. Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria for underrepresented populations to be considered for the Educational Access and Diversity Scholarship:
- Classified as a United States Military Veteran. Proof of veteran status must be on file with the Veteran & Military Student Success Center in order to qualify under military veteran criterion.
- Hispanic/Latino/Spanish origin, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander origin as documented by the Northeast State Office of Admissions and Records.
- Registered with Accessibility Services (formerly the Center for Students with Disabilities) at Northeast State.
Northeast State awards assistance to students to meet their college expenses through scholarships administered by the Northeast State Foundation or other sponsoring agencies that establish programs for Northeast State students. Northeast State scholarship awards are based on the
availability of funds and the criteria set forth by the appropriate program sponsor and are subject to change. Northeast State Scholarships are defined as competitive awards. Competitive scholarship awards are based primarily on academic merit with consideration given to a student's major, county of residence,
demonstrated leadership skills and motivation, among other selection criteria. Financial need is not necessarily a prerequisite for receiving a Northeast State scholarship award. No awards are defined as guaranteed scholarships. Neither academic merit nor financial need
guarantee a scholarship award to a student who has applied for admission to Northeast State.
Scholarship recipients are notified in writing. Scholarship recipients are designated according to various award schedules during the period May to August. Funds are applied to student accounts by the start of fall term classes. Scholarship awards are first applied to any unmet
tuition balances that recipients have due before any of the remaining funds are disbursed to the students. Scholarships may be awarded for fall and spring terms only. Scholarship funds are not available during the summer term unless indicated in a specific program’s
award criteria.
Yes. Students are eligible to apply for other scholarships and/or financial assistance from agencies outside Northeast State. Such scholarships may be awarded to students in addition to scholarships awarded through Northeast State. These scholarship recipients are
selected by the organization providing the scholarship funds. Northeast State serves only as the administrating agency.
These are special scholarship programs reserved for students with documented financial emergencies that negatively impact their abilities to attend and be successful in the college environment. Students must apply for these programs, meet the specific criteria
for award and provide documentation of the emergency. Awards are capped, are posted through Financial Aid, and are counted as regular scholarships. Funds cannot be used to pay tuition or book costs.
The Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (TELS) Program is funded by lottery revenues and administered by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC). To be considered for the Lottery Scholarship, a student must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) every year; no additional application is required. Although “scholarship” is included in the name of this program, TELS is a state aid program and is awarded at Northeast State by the Financial Aid Office, not the Scholarship Programs
Office.
Tennessee Promise is both a scholarship and mentoring program that will begin in the fall of 2015. It provides students a last-dollar scholarship, meaning the scholarship will cover mandatory tuition and fees not covered by the Pell Grant, the Hope Scholarship, or TSAA funds.
Tennessee Promise participants must complete eight hours of community service per term enrolled, as well as maintain satisfactory academic progress (2.0 GPA). Individuals must submit the Tennessee Promise Scholarship Application by November 1 and meet all other program
requirements. Tennessee Promise is a state aid program and is awarded at Northeast State by the Financial Aid Office, not the Scholarship Programs Office.
