Student Orientation

What is an advising and registration day?

At Northeast State, all degree and certificate seeking students are required to speak with an academic advisor prior to registering for classes. An academic advisor will make sure you are in the right major, and help you plan your schedule based on what you need to graduate! On your registration day you will speak one on one with an advisor and register for your classes. You may also meet with staff from the Financial Aid Office to ensure your financial aid is ready. Of course, we welcome you to explore campus and stop by any other offices you wish to visit as well.

Is advising and registration day in person or online?

Advising and registration day for incoming students will be offered in person.  Students who do not feel comfortable attending in person can request to meet with an advisor via zoom by emailing

When can I sign up for an advising and registration day?

Advising and registration day information for summer and fall 2023 incoming students will be mailed to students beginning March 2023.  Students admitted after the initial communication dates will receive information within one week of their official acceptance to Northeast State.

What if I need to reschedule for a different day or campus?

If the date and time you registered for no longer works for your schedule, please request an alternate date by emailing

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, guests are permitted to attend with students for their advising and registration day!  For questions or concerns, contact 423.323.3191 or

How do I activate my student email after being admitted?

What is the advising and registration day schedule?

Your advising and registration day is not by appointment! However, to ensure we have adequate staff coverage to assist you, we do ask that you sign up to come during the morning session and arrive anytime between 9am and 12pm or afternoon session and arrive anytime between 1pm and 4pm. Once you register for your classes, you are free to leave.

If I registered for classes during "Early Bird" at my high school or through my Point of Contact do I have to attend?

No! Once you are registered for your classes, you do not need to attend an advising and registration day. However, remember to check on your financial aid! Please contact the Financial Aid Office to be sure your application is complete, and your financial aid will be in place before classes begin.

Is advising and registration the same thing as orientation?

No! We understand that a traditional new student orientation experience can lead students to feel overwhelmed receiving so much information at once. That is why we are breaking out your advising and registration portion from the traditional welcome and campus information event. After you attend the advising and registration day and register for your classes, you can visit our Campus Resources website and Virtual Backpack to explore the numerous support services available!
