Student Organizations and Clubs


The Office of Student Life supports the sanctioned student organizations and clubs on campus through policies and procedures oversight.


American Welding Society (AWS) Holston Valley Student Chapter – Northeast State’s student section of the American Welding Society promotes the application and research of welding/metal fabrication among students. Educational development, sound practices, and career opportunities are emphasized. Nichole Manz-Young (TEC225, 423.354.5253) is the advisor.

Argumentation and Debate Society – The purpose of the Argumentation and Debate Society is to provide students with an opportunity to participate in competitive forensic tournaments. The society also provides learners with a forum for free expression and offers opportunities for students to voice their opinions on current events and matters of interest to the academic community. Dr. Ruth Livingston (H214, 423.279.7657), and Ellen Church (H212, 423-354-2556) serve as the advisors.

The Art Club – The Art Club is open to all Northeast State students, faculty, and staff. The club's purpose is to promote an appreciation of visual artistic expression on the Northeast State Community College campus. Members seek to provide a forum through which NeSCC students, in particular, can obtain professional skills relevant to support academic endeavors in the visual arts. This organization also provides students, faculty, staff, and the community with opportunities to develop skills in a variety of visual art media. Dr. Christal Hensley (H122, 423.354.2595) and Donna Wilt (L303C, 423.354.5250) serve as advisors.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) – The Association for Computing Machinery student chapter engages members through talks by local practitioners, visits from prominent speakers in the ACM Distinguished Speakers Program, technical and career workshops, field trips to computing installations, and social activities. Student chapters are the engines that drive professional networking and learning on a local level. Jon Holbrook (TEC213, 423.354.2413) and John McMeen (TEC219, 423-354-5213) serve as advisors.

Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) exists to establish a sense of community at Northeast State Community College through intentional programming that celebrates Hispanic/Latino culture, promotes cultural competency, and serves and advocates for Hispanic/Latino communities. Shirley Velasco (HH213, 423.354.2470) and Carlos Cornejo (H112, 423.354.2427) serve as advisors.

The Aviation Club –The Aviation Club is open to all Northeast State students, faculty, and staff. The club's purpose is to promote professionalism, aeronautical education, and inspire students towards a career or general interest in aviation. Members will network with aviation professionals, corporate and community leaders, and aviation enthusiasts. Richard Blevins (Hangar, 423.354.5179) and  Allen Bowman (Hangar, 423.354.5294) serve as advisors. 

Black Student Association (BSA) – The Black Student Association is an educational and cultural non-profit and non-political organization based at Northeast State. The organization is open to all Northeast State students, faculty, and staff. The BSA provides a professional, informational, and social network for students to ensure their retention, academic excellence, and participation in student life at Northeast State. Campus Christian Fellowship (CCF) – The Campus Christian Fellowship provides opportunities for students and employees to meet regularly to enjoy Christian fellowship and fun. Meetings include a variety of activities for encouragement, fellowship, Bible and topical studies, devotions, and prayer. Activities and meetings may be held on various NeSCC campuses. The club may also sponsor speakers or musical concerts for the campus, attend area concerts, and participate in school-wide events. CCF is not exclusive to any denomination and all are welcome to attend. April Allen (C2402, 423.354.5360) serves as the advisor.

Clinical Laboratory Science Club – The Clinical Laboratory Science Club promotes understanding of the field of laboratory medicine through scheduled meetings, distribution of educational materials, participation in recruitment opportunities at elementary/secondary schools and organizations, as well as through community service projects. Funds are raised to attend state and national meetings for the purpose of continuing education and networking with peers. Anyone interested in club membership is invited to join. Rose Marie Spangler (RCHP124, 423.354.5500) is the faculty advisor.

The Cor Group – The Cor Group is a Christian organization for members of the NeSCC community. The name is derived from a teaching of John Henry Cardinal Newman, "Cor ad cor loquitur," meaning heart speaks to heart. This phrase embodies the vital calling of Christians to speak with more than just words and to reach out with love to the hearts of others. The Cor Group is involved with ETSU's Catholic Center, and Fr. Michael Cummins leads most of the discussions and activities. The Cor Group is not exclusive to any denomination, and members come from a variety of backgrounds. All are welcome! Dr. Michael Pagel (H115, 423.354.2431) serves as advisor.

Council for Leadership, Advocacy, and Student Success (CLASS) – Northeast State’s Council for Leadership, Advocacy, and Student Success strives to improve the quality of student life by representing the student body, providing leadership development opportunities, and promoting communication between students, administration, faculty, and staff. Echoes and Images – Echoes and Images is Northeast State’s student literary and visual arts magazine. Published in the spring, the magazine features poems, short stories, essays, and visual art by currently enrolled students. Entry deadline for submissions is at the end of the fall semester. Exact dates are posted during the fall semester. Cash prizes are awarded to the first- and second-place winners in each category. Echoes and Images has been consistently recognized for excellence by the Southern Division of the Community College Humanities Association. Tempi Hale (H102, 423.354.2594), Dr. Christal Hensley (H122, 423.354.2595), Dr. Sandra Hiortdahl (E120, 423.354.5176), Josh Archer (H121, 423.354.2557), and Donna Wilt (L303C, 423.354.5250) are the faculty editors.

Esports Team Northeast State has several Esports teams that play from October to November. These teams compete against other regional and national colleges. Northeast State Esports is a member of the NJCAAE (National Junior College Athletic Association Esports). We will be streaming on Twitch and YouTube. Joshua Lindamood (L206) serves as the advisor

Elizabethton Service Club – The Northeast State at Elizabethton Service Club strives to generate and foster awareness and public interest within the community for Northeast State at Elizabethton. The club provides opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to develop leadership skills and to promote civic responsibility by working together through club activities. GREENS – The GRassroots Environmental Efforts at Northeast State is a club for students, staff, and faculty who are interested in helping preserve our fragile environment. The club’s main focus is to foster environmental leadership and stewardship at Northeast State and beyond. GREENS accomplishes this through education and action. Everyone has a part to play, and GREENS intends to educate others on how they can participate in this worthwhile effort. Michele Glass (B104F, 423.354.2496) and Jim Henrichs (J1015, 423.354.2481) serve as advisors.

Honors Student Association - The purpose of the Honors Student Association is to create fellowship among Honors Students that extends beyond the classroom by providing opportunities for educational events, social activities and community projects that will contribute to the overall atmosphere and development of the College. Jane Honeycutt (L303A, 423.354.2596) and Tabetha Garman (L303C, 423.354.5180) serve as advisors.

Intervarsity Christian Fellowship – Intervarsity Christian Fellowship is a non-denominational campus ministry. Members aim to build community on campus through God's love and to reach out to every corner of campus. Small group meetings are scheduled throughout the week. Please come join us!  Larry Hatfield (P312A, 423.354.5224) and Margaret Lester (P216C, 423.323.0202) serve as advisors.

Media Club - The media club provides students with hands-on experiences within the field of mass communication. The club offers a way for students to expand their skills, while contributing to the college and its greater communities. No prior experience is necessary to participate. Anna Robins (L110, 423.354.2428) and Brandon Bragg (H225, 423.254.5128) serve as advisors.

Movie Appreciation Club – The Movie Appreciation Club will contribute to campus life, the college, and to the individual development of students and community members. Colin Cox (H107, 423.354.5118), Jim Kelly (H108, 423.279.7669) and Tabetha Garman (H114, 423.354.5180) are the faculty advisors.

National Alumni Association of Northeast State - Members of the National Alumni Association of Northeast State will include former students who have received an academic credential (degree or certificate) from Northeast State Community College or the college by its former names, Northeast State Technical Community College, or Tri-Cities State Technical Institute. The National Alumni Association of Northeast State will serve and support the Office of Alumni and Northeast State Community College. Outreach and engagement efforts will be focused on events, fundraising, marketing , and communication in support of the mission of the college. This organization will serve as a bridge between current and future alumni and Northeast State Community College. Contact Joshua Johnson (C2415A, 423.354.5359) for more information.

Northeast State Scholars Foundation – The purpose of the Northeast State Scholars Foundation is to support the activities of the Northeast State Community College Foundation through student-driven initiatives that promote private giving and service learning. As a student foundation, the organization cultivates philanthropy among campus constituencies and seeks to incorporate philanthropic campaigns within the College’s mission. Membership is comprised voluntarily of students receiving Northeast State Scholarships, enrolling in the Northeast State Honors Program, or earning memberships in the campus honor societies. Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society – This organization is the international honor society that recognizes and promotes commitment to academic excellence in two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa supports the four hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship that are designed to give members opportunities for personal and academic growth as well as service to others. The Northeast State chapter is Alpha Iota Chi, and it has achieved five-star status, the highest level of participation in Phi Theta Kappa International activities. Dr. Jane Honeycutt (L303A, 423.354.2596) is the faculty advisor.

PRISM - PRISM (Pride, Raising Awareness, Individuality, Support & Mentor) is a student club whose mission is to support the LGBTQ+ community and allies through education, activism, and social engagement. Visibility and support are vital for LGBTQ+ students' wellbeing and personal growth. Adriel Slaughter (H120, 423.354.5184), Haley Warf (H119, 423.354.2593, and Amy Drinnon (E108, 423.547.8450) serve as advisors

Sci-fi/Fantasy Guild – The Sci-fi/Fantasy Guild is open to all students, faculty, and staff who enjoy science fiction and fantasy literature, film, games, and culture. The Sci-fi/Fantasy Guild has book and film discussions, themed fundraisers, and special interest outings. Audrey Peters (H123, 423-354-2417), Julie Andrade (H115, 423.354.5344), and Tabetha Garman (H114, 423.354.5180) are the faculty advisors.

Security Operations (SECOPS) at Northeast State Community College
Security Operations (SECOPS) at Northeast State Community College serves as an organization dedicated to educating students in the application of cyber security skills and principles. The organization strives to expose students to critical issues involved with new and emerging topics in the security industry. To accomplish these goals, the SECOPS at NES will stress to its members excellence in cyber security education. Faculty representatives will liaison with local agencies in fields related to cyber security, digital forensics, and offensive security to connect students with career opportunities beyond the traditional learning environment. In addition to exposing student to these opportunities, members will also provide outreach to students in secondary education with our service area to get students excited about cyber security. James Holbrook (TEC213, 423.354.2413) and Brice Matthews (TEC222, 423.354.3723) serve as the advisors. 

SkillsUSA® – SkillsUSA® is a national membership association serving students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations (including health occupations) and for further education. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is open to new and currently enrolled students who meet program eligibility requirements. Ray Acker (TEC223, 423.354.2426) and Nichole Manz-Young (TEC225, 423.354.5253) serves as the Northeast State chapter advisor.

The Student Nurses Association – The Student Nurse's Association is a student-led organization that is dedicated to encouraging and connecting students that are majoring in nursing prior to entrance into the nursing program and the entirety of the journey while in the nursing program. The organization promotes awareness to nursing as a skilled and caring profession to the general public with community outreach and positive image. Erin Sommer (RCHP222, 423-354-2446) and Liza Waldroupe (RCHP241B, 423-354-5502) serve as faculty advisors.  

The Student Social Work Organization (SSWO) – The Student Social Work Organization is a student-led organization that is devoted to create a positive educational and social atmosphere for students who are majoring in any social science-related field and/or are(is) interested in serving their community, becoming connected to likeminded students, and learning more about social issues that impact our community. Teressa Dobbs (H203, 423.354.5299) and Tricia Crawford (H206, 423.354.5117) serve as the faculty advisors. 

Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA) – The Student Tennessee Education Association helps prepare the education major to assume the role of a teacher and make a smooth transition from the campus to the classroom. This pre-professional organization gives students a voice in education by working in conjunction with local, state, and national associations. STEA provides personal growth through community service projects and professional growth through leadership and teamwork opportunities. STEA helps prepare teachers for the challenges of the 21st century classroom. Student Traffic Court – The  Student Traffic Court hears cases of students contesting traffic citations that result from violations of the Northeast State Traffic and Parking Regulations. A Chief Justice, an Associate Chief Justice, and a maximum of four Justices are selected from the student body through an application and interview process. Students who wish to contest a ticket must submit appeals at this page. Contact Beverly Leonard (423.354.2416) or Jennifer Webb (423.354.5241) for more information.

Student Veterans of America – The purpose of Student Veterans of America is to provide support and assistance to transitioning veterans; provide a network for mutual support and assistance among veterans, reservists, and those on active duty; encourage those who are seriously considering military service (ROTC/DEP); assist in the social, intellectual, and personal development of fellow veterans; and to contribute to the atmosphere and development of Northeast State. Susan Marshall (N110, 423-354-5305), Eric Stanton (H221, 423.354.5351), and Tricia Crawford (H206, 423.354.5117) serve as advisors.

Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) – Northeast State’s Student Chapter, a “Delta” chapter affiliated with the Upper East Tennessee Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (www.tnspe.org) and a member of the State Society of the National Society of Professional Engineers (www.nspe.org), was recognized and certified eligible for participation in the Program for NSPE Student Chapters in May 1999. All students interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are eligible to join. Derrick Thacker (F236, 423.354.2547) serves as advisor.

A Toast to Education – A Toast to Education is a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which each individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills that foster self-confidence and personal growth. The purposes of the organization include helping its members improve their abilities to communicate effectively, encouraging members to read and listen analytically, and affording leadership training for its members. A Toast to Education is affiliated with Toastmasters International and the District of Toastmasters International organizations. Volunteer Northeast State - Volunteer Northeast initiates and nurtures partnerships between community groups and students in order to improve the quality of life for our students and area residents in the community. The opportunities for individuals and student groups to get involved in community service is designed to offer faculty members and community organizations the ability to coordinate activities with academic courses and local agencies. Areas of focus include presenting community service opportunities, informing others about service-learning opportunities, and enriching student life with community art and culture. Andrea Amos (H208, 423.354.5221) serves as the faculty advisor.
