TRiO Student Support Services FAQs

Q: What is TRiO Student Support Services?
A: TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program by the U.S. Department of Education. TRiO provides a safety net of intrusive services and creates a Learning Community to retain students until they graduate and/or transfer. Students must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at Northeast State and have established need for academic support. All applications to TRiO are reviewed individually by the TRiO Director. Applicants are notified of their status by the Director.

Q: Do I qualify for TRiO Student Support Services?
A: All participants must qualify on the basis of income eligibility and/or first-generation college student status, and/or documented disability. Income eligibility is determined by family size and household taxable income for the previous year. All information is kept confidential. First-generation college student status is determined by a self-reported student-generated statement assuring that neither parent/guardian has earned a bachelor’s degree. Disability status is based on students being registered with Accessibility Services at Northeast State.

A: TRiO Student Support Services provides Academic Planning, Career Readiness, College &Cultural Trips, Counseling Resources, Financial Literacy, Mentoring (one-to-one individual mentoring), Scholarship and Internship Searches, Transfer Advising and Tutoring (one-to-one individual tutoring). All services are FREE OF CHARGE to Participants.

Q: How do I apply for TRiO?
A: Application is available online . Applications must be fully and accurately completed before consideration will be given for acceptance into the program. The Program Director reviews applications and determines eligibility based on: first-generation status, and/or income eligibility and/or disability status, academic need and motivation. Applicants will be notified by email regarding application status. The TRiO program serves 180 students each year and applying for the program does not guarantee acceptance. Upon acceptance, applicants will be assigned a TRiO Advisor.

Q: Where can I receive help if I am NOT eligible for TRiO services?
A: Each student at NeSCC is assigned a Faculty Advisor upon enrollment based on their major. Students may also receive assistance from the Advising Resource Center (ARC) and the Career & Workforce Development Center. Students who need tutorial assistance can also receive help from The Learning Center (TLC) on the first floor of The Learning Resource Center (Basler Library on Blountville campus). TLC may also be available at other NeSCC campus locations. Private tutoring may be possible for students willing to pay. The TRiO Tutor Coordinator will make inquiries for students from TRiO Tutors. Tutors who choose to do private tutoring set their own schedules and pay scales.

Q: What subjects are offered for tutoring?
A: Tutoring is offered in the college core subjects of math, science and English depending on the availability of qualified tutors. Tutoring may be on-site at a Northeast State campus and/or virtual through Zoom.
