Managing Federal Student Loans

Financial Aid & Tuition ยป Managing Federal Student Loans

While Northeast State does not participate in the Federal Direct Loan program, we know some of our students have loans from attending other colleges. We encourage students with existing federal loans to stay informed about their options.

As of 2026, the Department of Education has simplified repayment, but there are still a number of plans to choose from. To explore which plan fits your budget and to use the official Loan Simulator, visit the Federal Student Aid Repayment Overview.

For those pursuing careers in the non-profit or government sectors, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program remains a vital resource. PSLF allows eligible borrowers to have their remaining balance forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

Please note that as of July 1, 2026, new rules have refined employer eligibility to ensure organizations meet specific public service standards. We recommend using the PSLF Help Tool annually to certify your employment and track your progress toward forgiveness.

Identifying Your Loan Servicer

Your loan servicer is the company that handles the billing and customer service for your federal student loans. Because the Department of Education often transfers loans to different servicers, it is important to verify who is currently managing your account. You can find this information in minutes by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your dashboard at StudentAid.gov using your FSA ID.
  2. Scroll down to the “My Loan Servicers” section.
  3. Here, you will see the name and contact details for each of your servicers.

If you have multiple servicers, you will need to make separate payments to each unless you choose to consolidate the loans. For immediate assistance if you cannot log in, you may call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
