Northeast State Community College Faculty, Staff, and Students:
I want to take a moment to speak directly to you about an important step we’re taking together to ensure the safety and security of our campus community. Beginning February 2, 2026, we will implement a new access control system across our facilities.
This system is designed with one purpose in mind: to protect the people who make Northeast State such a special place to learn, work, and grow. Safety is not just a responsibility—it’s a promise. And it’s a promise we keep by adapting to the needs of our time.
What does this mean for you? Simply put, access to all Northeast State buildings will now require your college-issued ID. This change helps us maintain a secure environment while continuing to foster the openness and collaboration that define our campus. Our officers and staff are here to assist you every step of the way. If you have questions or need help, please reach out—we’re listening.
What should you expect after February 2, 2026? The most obvious change is that all entry doors to all Northeast State campus buildings will remain locked at all times. To gain access to the building, you will need to scan your college-issued student ID on the card reader at the door. The door will verify your credentials and automatically unlock. When the door unlocks, you are free to enter. You will not need to scan to exit the building; just exit as usual. You will be required to scan upon entering any building, so keep your ID handy. Please note that not every door on campus is considered an entrance. If the door does not have a card reader, you cannot enter through that door; however, you can still exit through those doors.
I understand there may be questions about this new process, and I want to make sure everything is clear. Below, I’ve shared answers to some of the most common questions I’ve received:
- What if I don’t have an ID yet?
- That’s completely understandable, especially if you’re a new student. We’ve considered this and implemented several options to support students and guests who may not have an ID right away.
- Visitor Access Card from the Welcome Center: You can pick up a temporary visitor access card at the Welcome Center located at the front entrance of the Blountville campus off Highway 75. Visitors and guests can use this card for the day. We’ll ask for a government-issued ID and a brief explanation of your visit to verify your identity. This pass allows you to access the campus to have your ID card issued or to take care of quick business. Please don’t forget to return the temporary card afterward.
- Video Intercoms: We’ve set up Video Intercoms at key spots on campus to help with access if you forget to check in at the Welcome Center. You’ll find these at the Pierce/General Studies Atrium Entrance and the Library in Blountville, and at the main entrance of all Satellite (off-campus) buildings.
- That’s completely understandable, especially if you’re a new student. We’ve considered this and implemented several options to support students and guests who may not have an ID right away.
- Will I be stopped from coming to campus if I don’t have an ID?
- Not at all! Anyone with legitimate business at Northeast State is welcome to visit. You will be asked to check out an ID card upon arrival to help you get around campus.
- How do I get a student ID card?
- Just visit the NeSCC Campus Police Department at any Northeast State campus, and an officer can make your ID card. They can do this at any time during the day.
- Is it too late to pick up my ID if I submitted my photo online?
- No, please stop by and pick it up as you are able.
- I submitted my photo online for my ID card. What is the expected turnaround time for the ID card to be ready for pickup?
- If you have submitted an online photo for your ID card, please give us at least 5 business days to process your ID card. You will receive an email from the police department to your student email account when your ID card is ready for pickup.
- Will my ID work at all Northeast State campuses?
- Yes! Your student ID is programmed to give you access to all Northeast State campuses.
- Am I required to display my ID when on campus?
- No, Northeast State policy does not require your ID card to be displayed while on campus. However, you may find it easier to keep the ID card on a retractable lanyard to ease movement between buildings. Please note that Northeast State policy requires you to present your issued ID upon request by a Northeast State official. Faculty and Staff are encouraged to wear their Northeast State name badge to assist our community with college-related resources.
- Where can I purchase a retractable reel and card sleeve?
- The bookstore on campus has plenty of these items in stock and ready for purchase.
- I need a new ID card. What is the process to replace my current card?
- Any replacement or duplicate ID cards will require a $5 replacement fee. You may pay the fee at the Business Office and then bring the receipt to the police department to obtain the new card. You may have only one active card at a time. If there is a clerical error or defect on the card (excluding normal wear and tear), we will replace it free of charge.
- I’m planning an on-campus event and want to ensure everyone can access it. What should I do?
- Usually, planning a campus event requires submitting a Use of Facilities Application. This helps make sure we have everything in place to support your event. Part of this process involves reviewing your security needs, including access. I’ll review your requests carefully and work out a fair access plan to help your event run smoothly.
I want you to know that this is more than a security measure; it’s a commitment to you. Every student, every faculty member, every staff member deserves to feel safe and supported. That’s why we’re doing this, and that’s why we’ll continue working tirelessly to protect our community.
Thank you for your understanding, your cooperation, and your trust. Together, we make Northeast State not only a place of learning but a place of belonging.
Stay safe, stay connected, and as always, if you see something, say something. We’re here for you.
